Dubai DJ Rohan Nunez is ripping up the rule book with his new record label, Freekz Like Us. A partnership with City Soul Project’s Ryan Briggs, the label taps into genre-bending tunes that bring something fresh and unique to the table. “We’re so tired of hearing regular, formulaic house tunes,” says Nunez. “We want to release tracks that break the rules.
“Freekz Like Us is a home for more edgy underground house and electronica,” explains Nunez. “We want to keep it more underground and non-commercial. We’re not looking to release music that populates the regular dance music charts. We’re focusing on edgier, experimental tracks that blur genre boundaries.”
First up on Freekz Like Us is the Malibu EP. Featuring four tracks produced by Rohan and Briggs — under their Ro Nunez and Tuco Briganta guises — it veers from deep techy vibes to minimal tech, breaks and ’90s influenced house. Check out the lead track below.
Friends in Music
The two friends in music first crossed paths five years ago when Nunez sent demos to Briggs’ City Soul Recordings label. After a few releases, the pair decided to collaborate together and bounced some tracks around. Realizing that their output didn’t conform to normal genre parameters, the lads set up Freekz Like Us.
Scheduled for an October release, the next EP on Freekz Like Us — again from Ro Nunez and Tuco Briganta — features “some ’90s-sounding big room tracks with a modern twist”. While the label is an outlet for their own creations at the moment, Nunez and Briggs plan to sign artists in the near future. And Nunez has advice for producers looking to send in demos. “Don’t follow trends or chart hits,” he advises. “Come up with a unique vibe and let that shine through. Fresh tracks offering something different are more likely to catch our ear.”
A prolific producer, Nunez has a minimal tech EP lined up for release later this month on Croatian label Dobar Gruv. A “deep beachy vibe” single will follow on Scottish label Soulroom Records in October under his Man Go Funk moniker.
