Lady of the House Panel Aims to Inspire Women into Dance Music Industry

‘Lady of the House’ is a soon-to-be published coffee table book featuring 150 women in dance music. Co-authored by Ian ‘Snowy’ Snowball and Laila McKenzie, the book reveals the inspirational stories of female DJs, producers, artists, promoters and managers. Six women featured in the book come together tonight, Tuesday 18 May, for the first ‘Lady of the House’ panel discussion. Tune in.

Funded through a Kickstarter campaign, ‘Lady of the House’ contains beautiful images and interviews with women who have contributed, and continue to contribute, to making the dance music scene. The book captures stories, thoughts and advice from Candi Staton to Anja Schneider, Ellen Allien to Julie McKnight, Anja Schneider to DJ Rap, and many more. In admiration of women in dance music, Carl Cox has written the foreword.

Legacy

“‘Lady of the House’ is so much more than just women in house,” said co-author Laila. “It’s about women being creative and doing what they love to do. In a time when so much change has happened and so many inequalities have been brought to light over the last year, we want to ensure the legacy of women’s power is passed down to future generations. The interviews are rich will stories of determination, empowerment, inspiration, challenges, passion, education, having goals and simply realising dreams.”

The Authors

Laila is a music events manager and promoter from Bristol, UK. She’s been active in the scene for two decades. Co-author Ian has written and compiled over 30 books. His latest was ‘Marshall Jefferson: Diary of a DJ’, which he co-wrote with Marshall. His work includes books on Keith Moon, Paul Weller and Oasis.

The authors will donate £1 from every book sale to the Night Time Industries Association’s diversity and inclusion initiative.
