Universal Arabic Music is co-founded by Universal Music Group and Republic Records in partnership with Wassim ‘Sal’ Slaiby. Founder and CEO of Salxco and XO Records, Sal manages more than 45 artists including The Weeknd. The Head of International Partnerships at streaming service Anghami, Sal steps into the role of CEO at Universal Arabic Music.

“Sal’s blueprint for Universal Arabic Music will become a catalyst for Arabic music in the marketplace,” said Republic Records boss Monte Lipman. “His ability to identify, curate and deliver talent globally remains a force of nature. The cultural importance of music from the MENA region crossing boundaries and reaching all corners of the world is long overdue.”

Signings

Jordanian singer/songwriter Issam Alnajjar has signed to the label. Issam topped Spotify’s Viral Global and Shazam’s Top 200 Global Chart with his debut single Hadal Ahbek. The track amassed over three billion views after 17-year-old Issam posted it on TikTok.

Sal also discovered and developed 19-year-old Palestinian-Chilean singer/songwriter Elyanna. Last year, the songstress released her self-titled debut EP and breakout hit Ana Lahale featuring Massari.

Vision

“In today’s global music marketplace, we’ve demonstrated time and again that worldwide hits come from anywhere,” said Universal Music Group chief Sir Lucian Grainge. “There is so much talent in this part of the world. With Sal’s intimate knowledge of the MENA region, alongside his track record for helping to break global artists, he brings vision, strategy and power to Universal Arabic Music.”
