Shout out to Luke Chable for a great new release showcasing Melbourne’s finest producers. The city’s finest revisit Luke’s 2004 hit Melburn, and bring the track bang up to date across seven remixes. John Digweed has released the awesome package – Melburn 2021 Remixes – on his Bedrock label, 17 years after signing the original.

Melbourne native Chable instigated the refresh project after fellow DJ and producer Kasey Taylor created a cheeky bootleg of the track some time ago. “My mind started bubbling with a concept to get an all Melbourne producer crew remixing Melburn,” recalls Luke, “and I promptly started calling around. The original track spoke to an incredibly strong DJ/producer clique and dance music community we had at the time. It was like saying ‘us’ and doing a heart thump with a fist. With that in mind, it had to be done.”

Meaty Selection

The remix package throws up a meaty selection of breaks and progressive house cuts. Leading the pack, Chable teams up with Dan Mangan for a slice of beautifully haunting, melancholic breaks. Jamie Stevens and Joe Miller add subtle acid undertones, while Danny Bonnici and Kasey Taylor unleash big room progressive beasts. “My last remix on Bedrock was about 20 years ago so it’s gone fill circle for me and right back to where it started,” says Taylor. “This is a special package and everyone brought their A-game for this release.”

ARIA winner and Grammy nominated producer Ivan Gough partners with Tom Evans and Jacob Anton Malmo under their TJIG moniker and their remix goes for the jugular. “Remixing one of my fave ever local tracks by Luke Chable is an honour,” claims Ivan.

With a more alternative mix from The Oddness, the package also includes the first release from Laura and Trevor Rose. Laura states: “We were beside ourselves when asked to do a remix of Melburn by Luke Chable. Our jaws dropped to the floor.”

World Stage

Australian breaks pioneer Phil K was on Chable’s mind as he developed the new remix package. A long-time friend of Chable’s, Phil K sadly passed away in November 2020. “I wanted to reignite Phil’s passion to bring Australia to the world stage once again,” said Luke. “Every single producer pulled up their socks and gave it their best crack. I’m insanely proud. We have some serious talent in Oz.” Listen to Luke Chable and Dan Mangan’s 2021 remix of Melburn below.
