Don’t Miss Eclectic Selector Peggy Gou at Soho Garden
An icon of club culture, the super talented Peggy Gou is DJing in Dubai this weekend. With her I Go track notching up best seller status with Juno and Phonica recently, the Asian dynamo headlines at Soho Garden on Friday 19 November. Veering between pumping techno, playful house and more abstract compositions, Gou’s sets are fun and creative. If you haven’t seen her in action yet, now’s the time.
Few artists in recent memory have made the impact of Peggy Gou. Her eclectic taste stems from her student days in London studying fashion. Frequent trips to legendary club Plastic People opened Gou’s ears to a wide variety of electronic sounds. Today, Gou’s DJ sets speak fondly to an open-ended musical philosophy, energised by a diverse range of influences.
Peggy Gou honours electronic music’s heritage in her productions – adding her own unique stamp on top. Proving her production chops, a run of releases quickly became international hits. Check out Gou Talk, It Makes You Forget (Itgehane), Starry Night and Jigoo (with US house music legend Maurice Fulton) for proof.
Prowess
Underscoring her prowess as a selector, Gou’s contribution to the legendary DJ-Kicks series arrived via !K7 in 2019. It weaved together original cuts and remixes from Aphex Twin, Kode9, Andrew Weatherall and Pearson Sound, among others.
The same year Peggy launched her own Gudu Records label with her own Moment EP. Since then, the label has released tracks from DMX Krew, Maurice Fulton, JRMS and Brain De Palma. Driving the label forward, Gou plans to keep discovering new talent from around the globe. She also intends to reissue rare and out of print records that have influenced her sound and collaborate more with iconic and influential producers. Next up on Gudu is “a landmark EP” by Indonesian DJ and artist Dea. Glazer Drum is out on Wednesday 24 November backed with a remix from I:Cube.
Tribute
Peggy’s last production on Gudu, I Go makes nods to her love of ’90s dance anthems. Talking about the track, Peggy said: “When I was a teenager in Korea, we didn’t have rave culture like there was in the UK. I Go is a tribute to that era, my own reimagination of the sounds I grew up loving.”
Influences
Expect to hear influences from throughout the decades when Peggy Gou hits the decks at Soho Garden. Table bookings are essential so give the Meydan Grandstand venue a call – on 052 3888849 – to bag your spot.
