Don’t miss cool creatives giving insights into their careers during an upcoming Arts Chat. Director and filmmaker Philip Rachid, dancer and choreographer Lana Fahmi and conceptual artist Jumairy will dive into their personal journeys as arts professionals in the UAE. They’ll discuss the challenges they faced and how their careers have evolved over the years.
Philip Rachid
A self-taught writer and director, Iraqi Kurdish filmmaker Philip was born in Bulgaria and raised in Amsterdam. Over his career, Philip has bagged a number of prestigious awards. In 2014 he won the Samsung Short Film Competition, during Dubai International Film Festival. A year later he lifted the Silver Act Responsible Award in Cannes for a UN female rights awareness campaign. Screened at film festivals all over the world, Philip’s short documentary film ‘SHE’ also scooped seven awards.
More recently, Philip directed an exclusive music video for gaming company PUBG Mobile. Starring Iraqi vlogger Noor Stars, the video racked up 1.4 million views within 12 hours. Since its December release, the video has been viewed 7.5 million times.
When he’s not behind the camera, Philip shares his knowledge through workshops and lectures for NYU-Abu Dhabi, SAE, Studio TwoFour54, and Panasonic.
Lana Fahmi
Born in Syria, Lana Fahmi has danced her way to success. Co-founder of Sima Performing Arts, Lana is also lead artist at Sima Dance Company. Lana’s incredible contemporary dance routines are dramatically beautiful and captivating. The super talented choreographer has been commissioned by Art Dubai and was handpicked to give a talk and performance at TEDx, also in Dubai.
Jumairy
Emirati conceptual artist Jumairy experiments with sound, film, digital technologies and performance to create immersive worlds. His “performative acts, scientific experiments and mysterious rituals” take place on stage, across the big screen and within smartphone apps.
Through residencies and exhibitions, Jumairy has presented his work across the region and internationally. His conceptual art has drawn crowds at Dubai Community Theatre & Arts Centre and Art Dubai. Supported by Barjeel Art Foundation and Maraya Art Centre, Jumairy’s creations also find favour with private collectors.
