Shesaid.so has released its Alternative Power 100 Music List 2020. It honours collectives, individuals and pioneering organisations for their “strength, passion for community and support for others during a particularly challenging year”.

Founded in 2014, shesaid.so is a global community of women and gender minorities in the music industry. Headquartered in London and LA, it has 18 chapters around the world including NYC, France, Italy, and Mumbai. Shesaid.so compiled its first Alternative Power 100 Music List in response to Billboard’s Power 100 List. It’s a celebration of underrepresented communities in the music industry, including women, people of colour, people with disabilities, LGBTQ, etc.

Resilience and Adaptability

The theme for this year’s Alternative Power 100 Music List is ‘Resilience and Adaptability’. The honourees met challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic and for introduced positive action in a challenging year.

“Our hope is that this year’s Alt List will bring you a moment of joy and celebration to close out such a difficult year,” said shesaid.so founder Andreea Magdalina. “We may be weathering the same storm but it’s important to acknowledge not all of us are on the same boat. The Alt List 2020 is here to highlight some of the most inspiring captains steering boats of all sizes.”

Empowering the Next Generation

Bee Adamic features in Alternative Power 100 List

Co-founder of Liberty Music PR and artist manager of synth-pop artist ADAL, Bee Adamic is on the list. Bee founded MAMI, a collective of mums encouraging and empowering the next generation of women in the business. Bee recently launched Liberty Academy, an online learning experience teaching young people about all aspects of the music industry.

She Knows Tech founder Jasmine Kok

Dedicated to closing the gender gap in the music technology industry, She Knows Tech provides education, networking opportunities and continued learning for female-identifying technologists of all levels. Organisation founder Jasmine Kok is recognised for offering Zoom masterclasses with top female music industry professionals. And for hosting “phenomenally successful” speed mentoring sessions.

Multi-Grammy, Mercury, BRIT and Mobo-nominated singer songwriter Nao is honoured for her involvement with Black Lives Matter and for launching the 3T (Tour, Tech, Training) Programme. It provides black women with the opportunity, knowledge and skills to join the live industry.

“Nao’s commitment to bridge the gap for women in spaces where they have not been visible is inspiring,” said Jamila Nabukeera, who nominated Nao. “She has used her position to empower others and her desire to provide opportunity creates hope for a brighter future, for so many women who want to work in the business.”
