Watch New Short Doc Starring UK D&B Pioneers Loxy & Ink

Independent dance label R&S Records is venturing into film-making. Label founders Renaat Vandepapeliere and Sabine Maes want to tell the stories of inspiring artists from around the world. The first in their series of short films captures the musical journey of UK drum & bass pioneers Loxy & Ink.

In ‘A Journey Through the Spectrum of Drum & Bass’, Loxy & Ink reflect on historical touchpoints within the d&B scene. The London-based DJs and producers reminisce on pirate radio station days and dubplate culture. They look at the correlation between music and fashion, the impact of the digital era and the explosion of d&b onto the worldwide stage.

In the 10-minute documentary, Ink says the d&b scene never labelled him. “As a black boy, as a black man, you are given that title in all walks of life,” he says. “Within this music industry and within drum & bass in particular, I was never labelled as that. It was always just the music that I brought to the table and the sound that I brought to the table.”

Key Players

From its inception to the present day, Loxy & Ink are key players within the d&b scene. They’ve held residencies at legendary d&b clubs Metalheadz, Speed and Renegade Hardware, releasing on all three clubs’ associated labels. In August, they released their Manifested Visions EP – their debut on Belgian label R&S. Transcending boundaries between d&b, hip-hop and roots dub, the five-track EP features collaborations with Resound, Jodi Lulati and Miriam Safo. Loxy & Ink are currently working on a full-length album for the label.

At the forefront of electronic music for nearly four decades, R&S famously forged the careers of The Aphex Twin, James Blake, Joey Beltram, Dave Angel, Ken Ishii, Lone, Djrum and countless others. The label’s new film series will cover music, art, philosophy, culture and social comment and opinion.

‘A Journey Through the Spectrum of Drum & Bass’ with Loxy & Ink is well worth 10 minutes of your time. We say, kick back with a coffee and watch it.
