Monolink Underscores his Brilliance on New Album ‘Under Darkening Skies’

Monolink underscores his brilliance on second album Under Darkening Skies. Out now, the longplayer boasts 12 tracks of pure loveliness from the German singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Throughout the album, Monolink’s guitar chords merge into synthetic pad sounds and his emotional vocals flirt with hypnotic bass vibrations.

Born Steffen Linck, Monolink succeeds where other artists have failed. Nailing his love for vocals and guitars to the post, he’s claimed the indie-folk/electronic crossover territory as his own.

Under Darkening Skies is an album that’s connecting different dots in my life, representing phases or moments I went through,” said Monolink. “This record is the result of a lot of love and frustration felt over the past almost two years spent in the studio.”

Diverse

Monolink describes Under Darkening Skies as his “most diverse” record to date. “I wanted to go back to writing actual songs again instead of adding vocals to a beat, which gave me the freedom to express more musical facets of myself. Eventually, it became the most diverse record I have made so far, influenced by a time of global social and economic uncertainty at an ever-increasing tempo of change.”

Hopes and Fears

The longplayer includes previous single releases The Prey and Otherside. The Prey, he explains, is about “projecting your hopes and fears onto someone so much that you can’t actually see the person underneath anymore”. Irish director Paraic McGloughlin and Monolink co-directed a dizzying stop-motion video for The Prey. The video is nominated in the Berlin Music Video Awards 2021, which take place on 29 June. Desire

Monolink describes Otherside as a “desire that can seduce and betray you.” The artist explained: “Otherside is a song inspired by the beauty and dangers of the unknown; a journey to peek behind the curtains of our perceived reality. You may find a place of breathtaking beauty there but you may also never find the way back.”

Limited Run

The follow-up to his 2018 debut album Amniotic, Under Darkening Skies is out on Embassy One, Ultra Records (North & South America) and Sweat It Out (Australia and NZ). There’s also a limited run on double vinyl with lenticular cover – one for the collectors.
