Eyes of the World Fall on David Guetta Gig from Burj Al Arab Helipad
The David Guetta gig from the helipad of Dubai’s iconic Burj Al Arab was pretty spectacular. Almost 600,000 fans around the world watched Guetta’s #UnitedAtHome gig online yesterday, Sunday 6th February. The virtual gig was free to watch with fans asked to donate to charity. UNICEF and Dubai Cares’ campaign ‘Education Uninterrupted’ will benefit from the special charity performance.
Previously, Guetta staged free gigs under his #UnitedAtHome umbrella in Miami, NYC and Paris, raising another $1.5 million for charity. Did you miss Guetta’s spectacular Dubai gig yesterday? Fear not, you can check it out below. And if you’d like to make a donation you can do so here.
Support
Speaking to Bloomberg before his gig at the Burj Al Arab, Guetta said his reason for launching #UnitedAtHome was three-fold. He missed playing and wanted to raise money for people in need. He also wanted to “support people that are doing what’s right by staying at home but they still need to be entertained.”
Guetta praised Dubai’s efforts to contain the spread of Coronavirus. His Burj Al Arab show had to meet strict regulations. “It was not so easy because of all those regulations but I think [Dubai’s] doing the right thing and so far, the results have been pretty spectacular.”
Real People
While Guetta believes virtual concerts are here to stay, he’s also looking forward to in-person gigs. “I have to be honest; nothing can replace a real concert with real people,” he said. The French DJ and producer received his vaccination against Covid-19 here in Dubai. “I believe in the vaccine,” he said. “I don’t feel like there is any other answer to our problem. I just hope things are gonna be fast enough in the world so we can go back to having real concerts because I miss people.”
Guetta added he was hopeful that some sort of summer season would take place in Ibiza this year. “I’m based in Ibiza during the summer,” he said. “Last year I took the decision not to play at all because my job is to make people happy, not to make them sick. Even though I had multiple proposals, I didn’t play at all. Between testing and vaccine, we should be able to have something in Ibiza. I hope so.”
Late last year, David Guetta ranked No.1 in DJmag’s Top 100 DJs poll. It’s the second time the French superstar DJ sits at the top of the poll. He was crowned No.1 for the first time in 2011. Guetta also produces music under his Jack Back alias.
