Drum & bass overlord Goldie makes a welcome return to Dubai later this year. An absolute icon of electronic music, the Metalheadz label boss will serve up fat rollers when he plays Project 174 on Saturday 16 November.
The godfather of D&B, graffiti artist, actor and all-round legend, Goldie has been at the forefront of the D&B and jungle scene since it began 30 years ago. His groundbreaking 1995 debut album ‘Timeless’ shot into the UK Album Charts at No.7 – a first for a D&B record. Meltdown Festival curator, DJ and producer James Lavelle described ‘Timeless’ as “the ‘Sgt. Pepper’ of drum & bass”, calling it an album that “changes the way you hear music”.
“‘Timeless’ was the ultimate statement of drum & bass’s technical sophistication and manipulation,” Goldie has said before. “But I don’t even know if I’d call it a drum & bass record. I’d prefer to call it inner city ghetto music.”
It’s the album that keeps on giving. Almost 20 years on from its release, Goldie performed ‘Timeless’ with the Heritage Orchestra for the first time at London’s Festival Hall, as part of the Meltdown Festival. And in 2023 Goldie released a remix version of the album, featuring rerubs from the likes of Break, Nookie, 4 Hero, Photek, Doc Scott and more.
Ferocious Creativity
Of course, there’s far more to Goldie than just one seminal album. He is an artist whose ferocious creativity shows no bounds. Thirty years deep, his Metalheadz label is world renowned with a prolific release schedule, while he returned to the contemporary art world in the mid-00s with exhibitions held across the globe. But his passion for music never dims, with Goldie previously claiming: “Music to me is so unconditional and when it enters your heart – and not your head – it touches you in a way that nothing else can.”
With Goldie headlining, alongside a curated line-up of special guests and the sharpest local DJ talent, the Project 174 party at P7 Arena, Media One, promises to be Dubai’s biggest D&B club night of the year. “I’m really looking forward to being back in a Dubai club environment for Project 174,” said Goldie. “It’s been a while. We’re gonna bring some of that desert heat indoors.”
