Burning Man organisers are “carefully and thoughtfully considering” what it would take to stage the event this year. They’re asking participants to take part in a survey to gauge public feeling in light of the pandemic.
“We are carefully and thoughtfully considering what it would take to build Black Rock City in the desert of Northern Nevada, in late August,” organisers said in a statement. “Obviously, we are faced with a number of variables, both known and unknown, related to the ongoing pandemic. We want nothing more than to build our city in the desert alongside you again. However, we will only move forward if, in collaboration with our leadership team of health and safety experts, including epidemiologists, and our government agency partners, we deem it safe to do so. Our number one priority is public safety.”
Survey Questions
Open campers, theme campers, mutant vehicle crews, performers, artists, volunteers and seasons employees can take part. Several survey questions are related to Covid.
One question asks what Covid-19 mitigation measures Burners would be willing to comply with. Suggestions include showing proof of vaccination, showing negative test verification and showing antibody verification if applicable. Other suggestions include required rapid onsite testing for everyone and required rapid onsite testing for anyone showing symptoms. Participants can also state if none of these seem necessary. Or if they would not be willing to comply with any such measures.
Best Possible Outcome
“Your answers will help us plan for the best possible outcome,” said Burning Man organisers. “We know some people will find the idea of even thinking about the playa right now difficult, and there’s an opportunity to reflect that feeling.” The survey closes at 12:01 pm PST on Thursday 28th January.
