Industry heavyweights are backing a new initiative to stamp out racism, sexism and discrimination within the scene. Serious about culture change, the Electronic Music Inclusion Initiative (EMII) wants to solve these “systemic problems”. The Association for Electronic Music and Ibiza’s International Music Summit co-founded the initiative. Pioneer DJ, Beatport, Sentric Music Group, InChorus and Women in Ctrl have pledged full support.

The EMII team want to hear from anyone who has experienced harassment or discrimination while working in the electronic music industry. By collecting experiences through an anonymous survey, EMII will gather the data needed to take “targeted action”.

Bias and Prejudice

“Microaggressions are day-to-day expressions of bias and prejudice that create a hostile environment for certain groups,” explained an EMII spokesperson. “For example, it might be comments about your appearance that make you uncomfortable or having others make assumptions about your abilities. These are far from ‘micro’ in impact so please share with us so that together we can make change happen.”

Survey data will help the Electronic Music Inclusion Initiative to “empower individuals, shape targeted action for change and drive accountability”. Fill out the survey anonymously here if you have an experience to share.

Inclusive

“We’re leading the way in creating a more inclusive electronic music industry, one where racism, sexism or discrimination of any kind is not tolerated,” said EMII. “Sexism, racism and many other forms of discrimination are systemic. Extreme examples make the headlines; but biases play out in small decisions, behaviours and comments that we all make, every day. To be anti-sexist, anti-racist – to be genuinely inclusive – we have to help companies prevent harassment. This forward-thinking approach sets our allies apart.

“When it comes to solving systemic problems, we believe in collaborating to share what’s working and what isn’t so we can all move forward together, faster.”
