Dubai Closes Pubs and Bars as Covid Measures Tighten in the Emirate

First came the ban on DJs and live entertainment in hotels and restaurants. Then came the ban on house parties with mates. Now pubs and bars in Dubai will remain closed until the end of February as government measures tighten in the fight against Covid-19. Ever get the feeling of travelling backwards?

Dubai’s Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management has ordered pubs and bars to remain closed from today, Tuesday 2nd February. The rule is just part of the latest precautionary measures now in place.

Restaurants and cafes throughout Dubai must close by 1am – back to the same closing time imposed last September. Indoor seated venues, including cinemas, entertainment and sports venues, must only operate at 50% capacity. Hotels must operate at 70% capacity. Hotels need to restrict the number of guests at swimming pools and private beaches to 70% of capacity too. Shopping malls must also operate at a reduced capacity of 70%.

Marked Increase

Dubai’s Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management has implemented the new rules “in response to rising violations of preventive measures”. Daily reports have shown “a marked increase” in the number of violations.

“The new decisions are part of a constant evaluation of the evolving Covid-19 situation to ensure all precautionary measures are updated and implemented in line with local, regional and international developments,” said Dubai Media Office. “The measures seek to further enhance efforts to combat Covid-19 and protect the health and safety of all citizens, residents and visitors.”

Entertainment activities in hotels and restaurants throughout Dubai were suspended until further notice on Thursday 21st January. Just a week later Dubai effectively put a ban on house parties with friends too. Only 10 first-degree relatives can currently attend weddings, social events and private parties at a hotel or home.
