Jindi Drops Fresh Cross-Culture Vibes on New Single ‘Hassa’

Dubai-based Sudanese artist Jindi has popped up on our radar with his new track Hassa. Out now, Hassa is an infectious mix of Afrobeat and dancehall with Jindi singing in Arabic and English. Produced by Nigerian producer MasterKraft, the cross-culture, smile-inducing infectious result will make you want to dance.

“Through this song we’ve managed to find common ground both musically and culturally,” said Jindi. “I wanted to evolve musically and show a different side of me.”

Bounce

Sudanese singer-songwriter Jindi is not afraid to bounce between genres. And he does so effortlessly, cherry-picking elements of funk, soul, pop, R&B, reggae and dancehall into his infectious grooves. His debut EP 1995 – released in 1999 – spawned the single Dancefloor, which topped pop charts in multiple countries across the MENA region. It also boasted the reggae vibes of Midnight Love, a collaboration with Smylie. It rocketed into the Top 10 in Trace Africa TV’s Sound System Selects chart. Listen to Midnight Love here.

Evolution

Jindi’s fresh new vibe on Hassa – which means ‘Now’ in Sudanese slang – is a sign of the artist’s evolution. Jindi is maturing and so is his music. With his Arabic and English lyrics flowing smoothly across Afrobeat and dancehall rhythms, Jindi is pulling together his roots and influences. “The music coming from Africa represents us as a community no matter which part we come from,” he claims. “This song is a link between different regions and cultures.”

Energy

Sudanese director Maimana Alhassan was drafted in for the music video, which was shot in Khartoum, Sudan. Capturing a whole load of energy, the video sees Jindi cruising down Khartoum’s famous Nile street, dancing around local markets and cutting loose with friends.

Jindi admits going through “a crazy time creatively during the pandemic, especially when everything looked uncertain at first. I needed to lift myself up and get everyone around me enjoying themselves again on a weekend.” Check out the video for Hassa below.
