UK label Renaissance is introducing club classics with a fresh twist to today’s clubbers via its ReMix Collection. The premise is simple: invite the biggest and best to rework undeniable Renaissance classics. So far Solomun, Tale of Us, Adam Beyer, Nicole Moudaber, Maceo Plex, Patrice Bäumel and Yotto have all turned in might re-rubs. Now Gorgon City step up to the plate.
Gorgon City’s Kye Gibbon and Matt Robson-Scott jumped at the chance to rework one of the label’s earliest, most immediate classics – Mephisto’s State of Mind. A little history lesson for those who weren’t even a twinkle in their father’s eye when the original was destroying dancefloors. Released in 1992, State of Mind (Quiet Mix) was a standout during the club’s formative years at their legendary Venue 44 home, in Mansfield. Its classic status was further compounded 18 months later when Sasha and John Digweed included it on the legendary Renaissance Mix Collection Vol.1. Featuring on the legendary compilation introduced the track to the ears of the wider world. It was, and is, an Italian house classic, remembered for its deft piano riff, wobbly female vox and that spoken word phrase – “music with more muscles”.
Peak-Time Monster
The Gorgon City Renaissance Remix doesn’t beat about the bush. Continuing the style and sound Kye and Matt established with their Somebody to Love and Ahora Todo V remixes, the track is a deep, peak-time monster. The lads inject bass and add an unforgettable acid mid and deep horns to dramatic effect. “We’re fans of the ReMix Collection so didn’t hesitate to take on State Of Mind,” said Kye. “The signature parts of the track are legendary. We had real fun knitting them into a tougher, contemporary sound.”
The ReMix Collection: Mephisto – State of Mind (Gorgon City Renaissance Remix) is out now on Renaissance Records. Listen to the rejuvenated version of this ’90s classic below.
