Dubai-based Rapper Seki SuperVillain isn’t Afraid to Experiment
Dubai-based rapper Seki SuperVillain returns with a new single, a new genre and a disturbing new video. Experimenting with new sounds since the release of his 2019 eponymously-titled album, the young talent turns out Dienamyte. And he’s blowing up boundaries with this one.
Seki SuperVillain called in long-time friend and partner Nnamdi for production duties on Dienamyte. The pair mashed together “techno vibes with drill beat patterns and a hint of rock”, creating a sound they call “tech drill”. Seki’s airy auto-tuned vocals sit over a catchy melody, moody bass and insistent stabs. In contrast to his saccharine-coated vocals, Seki wrote Dienamyte at low point in his life. The lyrics reveal his darkest thoughts at the time.
“At that time there was a lot going on with me,” said Seki. “I felt I didn’t have anyone to talk to. When I looked, I couldn’t find anyone and I felt really alone.”
Dark Message
Directed by Hangout Motel, the Dienamyte video is a bold criticism of modern society inspired by the increase in cyber mobbing. Seki SuperVillain plays an artist driven to follow fans’ instructions as they stream into his ‘Only Fans’ account. This dependence on social media approval drives him to end his life for money as fans watch live. The video’s vibrant bubble-gum colours are at odds with the dark message, which makes it all the more watchable. Check it out below.
Freshness
Formerly recording as Izzy, Seki SuperVillain injects freshness into the hip-hop community in UAE. Last year, he teamed up with neo hip-hop producer Aeli on Cry Me A Valley. The collaboration is one of the standout tracks on Aeli’s Goodbye series. Listen to Cry Me A Valley here.
Out now, Dienamyte is Seki’s latest evolution and demonstrates his inquisitive and fearless nature. With his sophomore album dropping soon, we’re keen to see where he heads across his new longplayer.
