If moody cinematic soundscapes are your thing, wrap your ears around new five-track EP Ithaca, out now on Vision. It’s a meeting of minds between LA-based electronic genius Amon Tobin and Dutch composer and producer Thijs de Vlieger (aka Thys) of bass behemoths Noisia. An odyssey of carefully constructed, intricate layers of glacial majesty, Ithaca is simply beautiful.
Tobin and Thys could never be accused of rushing this release. Thys revealed: “The EP was written in multiple sessions in San Francisco and LA over a time span of eight years.” That’s not to say the two producers didn’t enjoy the process. “It is quite dark in tone, but I think it also shows clearly that we had a lot of fun writing this material, obsessing over sounds, melodies and mixing synthetic, organic, orchestral and vocal textures,” added Thys.
Flying Solo
After Nosia announced they’d split up at the end of this year, Thys unleashed Unmoved Mover/Unwound EP in August. It saw him step into a clubbier realm and proclaim his solo material is a more accurate representation of the sounds he identifies with now. Indeed, he’s also been busy turning in remixes for Machinedrum, TOKiMONSTA and Addison Groove.
Hailed as one of electronica’s most innovative artists, Amon Tobin’s output is both prolific and impressive. The Nomark Records boss released two albums under his own name last year – Fear in a Handful of Dust and Long Stories. Time to Run under his Only Child Tyrant alias followed. This year has seen the triumphant return of Amon’s Two Fingers’ moniker for the Fight! Fight! Fight! LP before his new musical alter-ego Figueroa debuted with The World As We Know It.
Ithaca is not the first time Tobin and Thys have worked together and follows their Ghostcards EP, released in April.
