Musicians want their music to be heard but not all want to be recognised. From Slipknot to Daft Punk and Clapton, many artists choose to hide their identity behind heavy make-up, helmets and masks – to varying degrees of success. Saudi duo fulana are opting for the anonymity route, letting their music to do the talking.
Inspired by the likes of Metric, Bob Moses, Banks, Shura and Lady Gaga, fulana make gorgeous indie-pop. Drawing inspiration from past civilizations and everyday life, fulana’s lyrics are rich in emotion, covering loss, vulnerability and heartache.
Fresh Out the Trap
With a decade of writing experience behind them, fulana are now signed to Saudi’s Wall of Sound Records. Their new track Minarets is fresh out the trap. With a vocal equal parts delicate and forceful, Minarets rises and falls as waves of shoegaze guitar crash into skippy beats.
Minarets is also the first release from Jeddah duo fulana’s forthcoming debut album, which will drop soon. The single is available via fulana’s Bandcamp page and Anghami.
Bubbling Away Nicely
Things are certainly bubbling away nicely in the Saudi music scene. The first ever MDLBeast music festival, in 2019, gained international attention. We may see the second edition of the festival take place at the tail end of this year, depending on the Covid-19 situation. Set up last year, Wall of Sound Records is championing Saudi artists. Saudi indie rock duo Skeleton Crowd’s debut album will drop in Spring and now there’s more new music to look forward to from fulana.
