About Time! Depeche Mode Inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
It’s about time, really. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has honoured legendary dance goths Depeche Mode. The cult electronic trio, made up of founding members Dave Gahan, Andrew Fletcher and Martin Gore, accepted the award remotely and you can watch the speech they delivered from their respective homes.
The band acknowledged former members Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder, calling them “part of the DM family and the DM history and the success of this band”. They also thanked creative director Anton Corbijn, claiming he “made us look cool”. Mute Records’ Daniel Miller also received props for providing the band with their long-time label home.
In The Club
Depeche Mode singer Gahan said: “It’s incredible now to be in this club. We’ve been doing this most of our adult lives. I’d like to thank Martin and Fletch, while I’ve got the opportunity, because I don’t know what the hell I would have been doing if I didn’t find music.”
Gahan’s had quite a busy year, collaborating with Humanist and continuing to work on a new album with side-project Soulsavers.
Depeche Mode’s Enjoy the Silence video has been watched a staggering 211 million times on their YouTube page.
Charlize Theron hosted the induction, while Arcade Fire’s Win Butler and Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry lauded the band.
The Notorious B.I.G., Nine Inch Nails, T. Rex, Whitney Houston and The Doobie Brothers were also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The Notorious B.I.G.’s son CJ Wallace has produced an album of electronic music inspired by his father’s tracks. It’s due for release early next year.
