Hey Producers! Flex Your Studio Muscles in ‘Furball’ Remix Competition
Got the production chops to remix a breaks classic? Studio savvy enough to give a 2004 dancefloor destroyer a modern re-rub? Then check out Lobotomy Records’ remix competition. The label is inviting producers to re-image progressive breaks classic Furball. The remix comp is part of a fundraiser in memory of Australian DJ and producer Phil K.
Along with Damon Fonooni (aka Habersham) and Dave Preston, Phil K formed one third of The Operators. Their groundbreaking Furball track – with its weird glitchy breakdown – was a dancefloor and brain destroyer. Surfacing on Lobotomy Records, the track etched its place in breaks history. Industry peers around the world hailed Phil as a technical genius throughout his career. The Melbourne DJ and producer sadly passed away from cancer last November.
Remix Comp
US DJ and producer Jon Keating resurrected Lobotomy Records recently with the Forever Peaking from Above Fundraiser in Phil’s memory. The label is re-issuing Furball digitally and through a limited batch of the original vinyl. On sale now through the label’s Bandcamp page, the digital release includes the Original and Marscruiser mixes, plus a brand new 2021 remix from Blake Potter. One of the digital packages also contains track stems for the remix comp. Established and emerging producers have until 31 December to submit their new interpretation of Furball. Keating, Fonooni and Preston will pick three winning remixes to release next Spring.
Tribute Mixes
A number of compilations are also available as part of the fundraiser. Keating has compiled special tribute DJ mixes – one house, one breaks – consisting entirely of tracks Phil K produced, remixed, used in his mixes or released on his co-owned Zero Tolerance label.
The Forever Peaking from Above Fundraiser hopes to raise US$10,000 for Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS Ltd). Dedicated to supporting the creation of electronic music, the charity was close to Phil K’s heart.
